Organization of the District of
Columbia State Society:
Organized on April 8; 1937 in the Presidential Suite
of the Willard Hotel in Washington D.C.; the District of Columbia
State Society was originally named the Colonel William Branthwayte
Chapter after the ancestor of the organizing president; Mrs. Frank
Morrison.
Pertinent Facts about the District
of Columbia State
Society:
The members of the society have given generously
to the Headquarters and have managed the care of the kitchen, which
is the "D.C. State Society Room." A generous donation
was made recently to the D.C. Room in honor of Marion Virginia True
who has served as the treasurer of the Society for many years and
was a past Headquarters Treasurer.
For many years, the Society has sponsored a Music
Scholarship for a student in the music department at the University
of the District of Columbia.
In recent years, the Society has increased its membership
by nearly 15% and continues to grow.

Historic Sites Marked by the District
of Columbia State Society:
During the presidency of Mrs. William Edson (Laura),
a property in Georgetown, D.C. was marked. In May 1995, a historic
marker was placed on a house owned by a member, Elsie Brown, in
Cox Row. It reads "COX ROW Built in 1817-18 by Col. John Cox,
Mayor of Georgetown, 1823-1845." Elizabeth Conway of the D.C.
Society did the historical research in the Georgetown Library. Many
distinguished guests stayed at Cox Row including Lafayette on his
last visit to American. Among the distinguished owners of houses
on Cox Row is Commodore Morris, a naval hero in the War of 1812.
