The State Society was officially organized June 21, 1950 in Raleigh, NC. It now has nineteen chapters.

Pertinent Facts About the
North Carolina State Society:

Julia Forbes Thornton, the first President General from NC 1950-52. Went directly from a state President to President General.

Shirley Turner Spaeth, the second President General from NC 1989-1991

Bertie Spruill Thompson (Mrs. A. L.) wrote the Salute to the Flag of the Colonial Dames XVII Century in 1958, which was adopted during the April National Conference.

Mrs. Lawrence J. Gunn, Reidsville was instrumental in correcting the plaque at St. George's Chapel at Gravesend, England. It had Thomas but was corrected to John Rolfe.

Helen Hogue Dabney served as Corresponding Secretary General.

In 1998 a large North Carolina Chippendale sofa placed in NCNA Ballroom, project of Mrs. R. C. Hepler, State President.

Historic Sites Marked by North Carolina
:

June 26, 1955 Sir Walter Raleigh Chapter marked Thomas Norcom House in Chowan County, built 1669. First marking in the state.

September 23,1957 Sir Walter Raleigh Chapter marked 1657 Merchants Hope Church in Prince County in honor of ancestor Thomas Chappell (1612-1683)

May 1, 1960 Sir Richard Grenville Chapter marked the Belvedere Place, the 1698-1699 land grants to Gabriel Newby in Perquimans County.

May 22, 1969 George Durant Chapter honored the oldest recorded land grant, 1660, for Nathaniel Batts in North Carolina with a bronze plaque on the Weeksville School grounds. Deed was found in Norfolk Virginia Courthouse by Dr. Elizabeth McPherson and Mrs. E O. Baum, members of the chapter.

March 1, 1979 The 1979 State Conference met in the Rotunda of the Capitol in Raleigh to place a bronze plaque honoring the three NC Signers of the Constitution of the United States. Project of State President, Mrs. Walter Spaeth. Last plaque to be placed in the Rotunda, all space filled.

November 18, 1981 Correction of Pocahontas as of husband's name (from Thomas to John) on Memorial Marker at St. George's Parrish Church, Gravesend. England. Project of State President Mrs. Raymond Hall.

April 14, 1987 Samuel Swann Memorial Chapter presented a bronze plaque mounted on stone base honoring Major Samuel Swann 1653-1707, a Royal Customs Collector for whom the Samuel Swann Chapter is named.

September 6, 1987 Bronze marker placed in Visitor Center of the Reed Gold Mines by the Governor John Archdale Chapter. Site in Cabarrus County, NC.

September 29, 1990 North Carolina Society marked the Newbold-White House in Hertford (oldest brick house in North Carolina, 1685).

May 4, 1991 Highway marker on Ann Marwood Durant (1644-1), First woman attorney in NC. Project of Mrs. W. W. Ellis, State President.

October 22, 1992 Governor Philip Ludwell Chapter marked the Smith McDowell House in Asheville, built in the 1840's by the earliest white settlers in the western part of NC.

April 30, 1994 Friendship Marker placed by the State Society in Manteo, NC, near the ship Elizabeth II, to mark the friendship shown the first whites in Early America by the Indians. Project of Mrs. William L. Davis, State President.

October 26, 1996 The Deep River Chapter marked the McLendon Cabin in Moore County, built around 1760.

March 7, 1998 Eleanor White Dare Chapter marked the historic "Stonewell Manor," a classical architectural treasure built around 1825 in Rocky Mount, NC. The home of Bennett Bunn (1787-1849) is on the Register of Historic Places.

March 20, 1998 The CDXVIIC marker was placed on the monument honoring the Peele family in America. Lawrence Peele, the oldest Peele in America arrived in 1621. The State President, Mrs. Raymond C. Hepler, Jr., gave the history on Lawrence as part of the dedication ceremony honoring the Peele family and its service to America. The Deep River Chapter President, Mrs. Charles Lunney, placed the State Wreath during the wreath laying ceremony which also honored the Revolutionary War Peele (5th generation) who was honored by the SAR State President, Mr. Charles Page, who spoke while the National Vice President, Mr. T. N. Clark, placed the SAR wreath.

November 18, 1998 The George Durant Chapter rededicated the marker of George Durant, oldest land grant in North Carolina on Weeksville School grounds. The 400 students of Weeksville School were in attendance.

March 19, 1999 The State Society placed a marker beside one of the roads which is part of the ancient Indian Trading Warrior Path which was used by the colonists by treaty until 1744, and after that masses used the trail or Great Wagon Road to colonize the western section moving North to South from the Great Lakes down to Georgia. Used by the Quakers, Germans, and Scotch Irish from Pennsylvania through Bethabarba, Salem, Salisbury, Charlotte, down to Augustus. This was the project of the State President, Mrs. Raymond C. Hepler, Jr.

April 7, 1999 The Eleanor White Dare Chapter marked Whitaker's Chapel, near Enfield, NC. This church was built in 1740 by Richard Whitaker. It was a social center for the community, and is archaeologically important to save, for the future.

August 3, 2002 State Society dedicated a marker to John Lawson, Survey General of Carolina (1708-1711) at the Charlotte Museum of History. He wrote "A New Voyage to Carolina" about his 500 mile trek through the wilderness from Charlestown, SC to Pineville just South of Charlotte ending at Pamlico Sound near what is presently Washington, NC.

February 15, 2003 Ann Marwood Durant Chapter marked the Old Wilmington City Market.

September 2004 Lord Craven Chapter marked an historical home in Winnabow.
