A Message from the Pennsylvania
State President :
Millennium celebration theme of the Pennsylvania State Society:
"Into the next century
with knowledge from the past."
History
of the Pennsylvania State Society:
The first Pennsylvania chapter, Three Rivers, organized in April 1961 and was chartered in April 1962. Mrs. David A. Scott, Organizing President, was a member in Virginia before organizing the Pennsylvania group. Nine members met to organize the chapter, seven of whom transferred from Richmond, Virginia. Three Rivers had twenty-eight members who signed the charter at the home of Mrs. Clifford A. Lake.
The second chapter to charter was Elizabeth Van
Metre in Uniontown. They organized in April 1970 and were chartered
in April 1973. Organizing President was Mrs. John P. Miller.
This chapter has since disbanded.
Penn’s Grant in Philadelphia organized in October
1973 and chartered in March 1974. Twenty-four members signed
the charter at Lord Stirling’s Headquarters, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
The Organizing President was Mrs. Edward Hungerford. Following
the national requirement, when three chapters had been chartered
it was necessary to form a Pennsylvania State Society. The organizational
meeting was held at the Sheraton Motor Inn in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
in March of 1975. Mrs. Edward Hungerford, Penn’s Grant Chapter,
was elected Organizing President and Mrs. David A. Scott, Three
Rivers Chapter, was named Honorary Organizing President.
The fourth chapter, The Treaty Elm, was organized
in April 1975 and chartered in January 1977. Mrs. Robert L. Lyon
was Organizing President. John Hand Chapter was next to form.
They organized in November 1976 and were chartered in November
1979. Twenty-one members signed their charter. Attending the
meeting were Mrs. Hungerford and Mrs. Alfred Novello, Pennsylvania
State President. Mrs. Robert H. Dymond was the Organizing President.
Miss Glady Tozier organized Lycoming Chapter in
August 1979. Mrs. Leonard A. Work organized Deacon John Burnham
Chapter in June 1980. Neither
chapter was able to obtain the twenty-one members needed to
charter. Lycoming disbanded in the spring of 1984; most members
transferred
to the Treaty Elm Chapter.
Beaver Town was next to organize in March 1980
and was chartered May 19, 1982 under the efforts of Mrs. Paul
Bennett, Organizing President.
Thomas Olney Chapter organized in October 1982
and chartered May 19, 1984.
Dr. Ellen Perrin, Pennsylvania State President, attended
the signing at Bushkill Center Inn. This chapter has since
disbanded.
Bedford Manor Chapter was organized on September
16, 1983. Mrs. John
V. Scherer, Organizing President, led a group of dedicated
workers to have twenty-five members for the signing on
June 22,
1984.
Dr. Ellen Perrin attended the signing. This chapter has
disbanded. Member were given the opportunity to be members-at-large
for one year, many joined other chapters.
Currently there are five active chapters in Pennsylvania.
Pertinent Facts About the Pennsylvania State
Society:
Pennsylvania has been presented many National awards
for the work of the chapters in raising money for scholarships,
for marking
historic sites, for the submission of genealogical records, for
gifts to the Headquarters Museum, for preservation of historic
documents, and for service to Veterans to name a few. We continue
to promote the object of the National Society both within the chapters
and in our community outreach. We have taken on Pennsylvania History
Day as an annual Project, presenting two awards at the state function.
The millennium celebration theme continues: “Into the next
century with knowledge from the past”. It follows the object
of the Society for education and preservation. We are proud of
our Pennsylvania member for continuing with these goals.
