Organization of the Texas
State Society:
In 1931 Mrs. Alice Leala Kerr Price (Mrs. Thomas P.)
of San Antonio was appointed by the National Society to organize the
Texas Society. Mrs. Price began her work and by 1932 there were 14
members. At this time unprecedented circumstances caused Mrs. Price
to request the organization be suspended until such time she could
take it up again. Five years later, in 1937, she resumed her
organizing duties and immediately added more members. The first
official organizational meeting was held on April 22, 1939 at the
Plaza Hotel in San Antonio with 50 members. Appointed officers were
installed for the 1939-1941 term with Mrs. Price as President. By
1940 there was enough interest to organize chapters in various
cities.
Mrs. Price joined Colonial Dames on August 10, 1931,
National #425. She was granted Honorary Membership as Texas
Organizing President and died on June 1, 1966. She was a member of
the now disbanded James Kerr Chapter of San Antonio and her colonial
ancestor was Lt. Col. Walter Ashton of Virginia .
Texas now has 39 Chapters with 1,278
Members.
